If you have Acrobat Exchange or the Distiller, I'd suggest
Leonard's latter route. Some apps (FreeHand especially) seem to
export somewhat non-standard EPSs that contain stuff Illustrator
doesn't seem to be able to parse. It might be because I use an
older version of Illustrator (5.0), but often when I'm trying to
read FreeHand EPSs, or occasionally those generated by other
apps, Illustrator 5.0.1 will choke on and come up with a blank
page.

Photoshop seems to be able to rasterize the same files fine,
however.
