In my opinion, yes, you are supposed to respond to questions on this
list, and, no, there is NO obligation to check out any other source
first. The other sources are obviously _very_ helpful, but I agree with
you, that the implication that you _must_ go there first is wrong.

This is not the first post to try and impose this. I haven't kept the
earlier one, but, in effect it implied a fairly high degree of
impatience/intolerance in people who didn't do the 'required homework'
before 'bothering the busy people of the list'. I don't believe this is
necessary on a list where people willingly come to share their knowledge
and enjoy the discourse. Lists like this owe their success to the
interaction of people and ideas. This is quite different to simply
referencing an online knowledge base.

We're all new to the list, so you're not breaking any established
etiquette, but you are helping to form it, which is great.
