You can run software on either the Mac or the PC to share the cablemodem.
The cablemodem I have is set up by my cable company to only recognize one
ethernet hardware address. If I want to change gateway machines, it
requires a service call to my cable company.

Keeping that in mind, if you want to run the gateway on your PC, there are
others but it's hard to beat WinGate for cost, simplicity, etc. We use it
at my office to share a dial-up (on demand) connection for 8 people and it
works beautifully - even for a pathetic 33.6Kbps internet connection.

At home I've got a cablemodem and several machines on my personal network.
I use the Vicom software which also works very smoothly and is easy to
configure. I have noticed that the Mac which runs the gateway does take a
substantial network performance hit. IPNetRouter will also perform the same
function but I haven't used it enough to gauge performance issues.

My advice is to setup the gateway software on a server or a machine you use
less frequently. There's really no need to bog down your primary machine
with extra networking tasks.
