Macs and NT clients on a Unix Server?

Hi!

I'm Sys Adm of a research institute. We're working on ca. 40 Macs using a
Mac server running AppleShare IP. Our GIS Software (that used to run on some
Unix machines) will switch to NT, so we will buy a few machines. To run the
software, we also need a NT Server.

At the moment, we are testing a NT server running Mac services, which seems
to be working fine. So we're planning to switch to NT as server system,
since it's a nuisance to have to administer two servers, each with an
individual user database and backup facility.

The drawback of this switch would be that we'd have to transfer email and
www services to NT (they are running fine on a Unix and Mac Machine,
respectively). What's more, all our Unix equipment (three Solaris
workstations and some external storage devices) would be useless.

On the other hand, if we could connect all clients to our Unix machines,
this would be just fine.

My question, then, is this: Is there a possibility to attach Mac and NT
clients to a Unix server (I know that _this_ works) using _one_ user
database for access privileges, group settings and passwords? And is there
administration software on Unix that lets you manage such a database easily,
without having to learn dozens of cryptic commands (sorry to all Unix
freaks)?

I'd be glad to hear any advice or experience from people in similar
situations.
