Yes but the money you save on the cheap tape will be spent on something
like ARCserve plus extra for the Mac clients. I used to use ARCserve to
backup the Macs and found it too unreliable. ARCserve does great on PCs
and the server (I still use it for that) but have switched to Retrospect
to backup the Macs and haven't been a bit sorry.
By cheap tape for PC I'm assuming you mean something non-SCSI connected
otherwise you'd be able to connect it to the Mac just as easy. Backup
speeds will be much slower though if it's not a SCSI device. Retrospect
4.0 with TCP/IP clients can backup fairly fast. The tape drive would be
the only thing to slow you down, assuming you're running ethernet on the
Macs.
