Sounds like the firmware update screwed something up or it was already screwed up when you got it back from Apple. Maybe the hard drive is not fully connected or came loose during shipping? Maybe something else came loose. Things do get bounced around. Of course that would mean taking it apart and reconnecting every connector you can find. It's just a guess but it sounds like a hardware problem.
