Sounds like it doesn't know what to start up from...zap the PRAM--from a
cold shut down, press the start up button wait till the chime immediately
hold down the Apple key, the Option key and both letters <P> and <R>. All
four keys at once. The iMac will chime again, keep the keys down and wait
for the third time it chimes. Let go of the keys and let it start up
normally...hopefully.
