Last I looked at it, Sophos 'managed' AV updates by putting an alias to
the network installer in the startup items folder, so that the mac
installs any newly downloaded versions/Identity file updates when you
start it up. Not very managed in my opinion.

We've found it is far simpler to subscribe to Sophos e-mail notification
service and have the users click on the linked identity files to
download and install them. That said, we've only a minority of users who
are using Sophos here. (All the macs are, but so are some of our PC
users, as well as everyone with a home computer. Th UA got a site
license for Sophos)

Actually, on a Mac I've found it far simpler to turn off Quicktime
autostart on the CD's and avoid Microsoft cruft and I really have no
virus problems to worry about, so no need to install AV software. :-)
