I am not sure if that model of printer is postscript, if so, then you need
to load the Epson PS drivers on the 2000 box. The Mac will then use the
LaserWriter driver and (making sure you have the Epson PPD file installed)
should give you full functionality. This is how we do it with all our Laser
Printing, however we do not use SFM, we use a third party print server that
uses IP rather than AppleTalk (resulting in much much much much much faster
(did I say faster yet??)) printing, and almost ZERO crashes or instances
where I need to look at the server. I will provide you with more info if
you want. We used to SFM on NT4 and had nothing but blue screens and
printing issues early on, then it settled down, but this solution has been
hassle free (and did I mention much faster printing?).

Subject: [WinMac] Printing through NT/2000 server

Good morning all,
first I must say thanks to all list participants
for such an informative and at times entertaining list.

My question is simple - I'm trying to find a
straight answer about printing through the Windows 2000
Print Svcs. for Mac - if my Macs grab an Epson Stylus
Color 3000 through the Laserwriter driver to connect
to this shared printer, are they going to be limited in
any way by the 2000 server?
One obvious difference is that the users don't see
the typical Epson printer dialog, preventing them from
adjusting paper type, dpi, etc. I'm assuming that the
defaults on the server are what will be used. This might
be a problem.

Any further info, or suggestions out there? I hate
to tell users "Well, for this job, just spool it directly
through AppleTalk to the printer" when I know there are
other users spooling through the server.

I'd be happy to add more info if it helps anyone,
this message was composed in somewhat of a hurry :-)

cheers,
Nathan Marentette
