Andrew,
This may be too simple, but is worth a try. Trash the Finder
preferences and the System preferences and restart the computer (these
are found in the Boot HD(usually Macintosh HD):System Folder:Preferences
folder). These preferences will rebuild themselves during the start up
following the restart. Trashing these preferences is a good practice
whenever you have crashed while online or while communicating with a
peripheral device, such as a printer. Often, this will be enough to get
you back to going. If there is a true conflict which is causing your
freeze, then you will eventually have to find it. Having multiple
versions of the same driver for the printer could cause the problem.
Having multiple versions of your communication software can cause the
problem or having extensions in general which are trying to do the same
thing can cause the problem. many other things can cause the problem of
freezing, but these are a good place to start looking.
You will need to re-set some minor control panel settings (mouse,
Appearance, General controls panel, etc . . . if you like and also the
"View" Options and Preferences from the Finder menu OS 9.0 or 9.1. All
bets are off in OS 10 cause I don't know how that one works yet.
May God Bless your efforts in finding and solving this problem.
May God Bless us all as well.
