There are at least three ways of doing this in Windows 95 and later.

    1) The OS provides "Direct Cable Connection" using a null modem serial
cable, a bidirectional parallel cable, or the machines' IR ports. You share
the disk(s) in question, configure the link and off you go. Look up "Direct
Cable Connection" in Windows Help for the details. For Win 98, ME and 2000,
I think you can also use a computer-to-computer USB cable.

    2) Peer-to-peer networking using a crossover cable to connect the two RJ45
sockets. Much faster data transfer, but can be confusing if one or both
machines also have to be configured to log onto a domain.

    3) 3rd party software such as Laplink, which basically provides a smarter
interface to (1). Versions of Laplink have recetnly appeared on magazine
cover disks here in the UK.

In the Mac<>PC scenario, you should be able to use Dave on the Mac to access
the PC's drive(s) via a network connection. Alternatively - but less
elegantly - network the machines via TCP/IP and run an ftp server on one and
    a client on the other.
