Our group recently came across a very similar problem on both Win 2K and NT
4 running MS Word 97. The problem turned out to be due to the Automatic
Update linking to about 8 Visio documents. The fix was to change the link
updating to Manual. (Select "Links" under the "Edit" menu in MS Word. For
each link listed with Update set to "Auto", change it to "Manual".) Let us
know if this applies and works for you.
