In case you haven't tried, you could delete all the partitions and then try
to reallocate them.
You could try using different partitioning software. I have never had a
problem using the fdisk which comes with most variants of linux. Below is a
link to a pretty good tutorial about partitioning disks for use with
linux.....i thought this might help.

I have never used partition magic so i don't know specifically what the
error is. - perhaps this is a problem with your disk... However, a few
months ago I had a problem partitioning more than 497Mb of a 6Gb HDD. This
was using the fdisk that comes with PC DOS 2000 (ibm's version of MS DOS)
and what the problem turned out to be was that FDISK was not getting passed
the correct cylinder information from the bios. Based on this, you could
check the bios to make sure that it is getting the disk information correct
- If the bios isn't seeing the HDD correctly then nothing else will, as i'm
sure you're aware:-)
If you plan to put a windows install and a linux install on the disk, i
think the best way to do it is to partition the amount of the disk you want
for windows then do the entire windows install. Then use a linux
partitioning tool to repartition the rest of the space afterwards. Strange
things can happen when you do it the other way round......and i definitely
recommend using lilo or something thats non - microsoft as your boot
selecting tool at startup.
don't know if any of this will help you, but thats all i could think of.
giles.

Subject: [WinMac] Strange disk.
Hi again,
A few months ago, I installed a new 10 GB hard disk on my daughter's old IBM
Aptiva. For some reason, it was only possible to format 5 GB as the other 5
GB were not recognized by the computer. In formatting programs, the space
shows up as unallocated.
I have been trying to install a couple of Linux partitions on the Aptiva,
even going as far as to reduce the amount of the FAT 32 partition, to no
avail. I then tried to resize my FAT 32 partition back to its original size
and that doesn't work either. In all cases, I get the following error
message from Partition Magic 6.0:
"Error 56 Sector not in specified read or write range."
What gives? any ideas or advise?
Cheers,
Brian
