Next message: Brian Durant: "[WinMac] Multiple phone numbers in DUN."
Hi again,
The following is a summary of my trials and tribulations with a
Fujitsu-Siemens Clevin Easy (legacy-free) PC. The computer was purchased in
Finland and came with a Finnish system and rescue CD. The main problem was
that as all peripherals (floppy drive "F:" and Zip 250 "E:") are USB, it
isn't possible to boot with a set of rescue disks to format the hard drive
and install a new Win 98 SE (UK) system. The second major limitation was
that while the BIOS on the Celvin supports booting from the CD-ROM drive and
is set to do it, there are only certain CD's that it is capable of booting
from. It will boot from a Win 98 (US) system CD and from the rescue CD (this
list may become longer at some point).
I used PartitionMagic 6.0 to format the hard drive. The PartitionMagic
application reboots and completes it's tasks in high cache, so it is
possible to format a drive, despite maybe not being able to boot from a
CD-ROM. To then get the Win 98 SE (UK) system on the Celvin, I had to boot
from the rescue CD, which loads as "Z:", switch to the system CD and install
normally.
Next, I had problems installing the Celvin drivers onto the computer, but
found that I needed to install the drivers from the CD, restart and then
configure the various devices during startup, otherwise I would get a bunch
of error message for files that were not located in
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PRECOPY\" and prompted to insert the Win 98 SE (UK)
system disk.
I have installed PCMacLAN onto the Celvin, rather than installing Win 2000,
as this computer is used by my kids and they want game functionality. I have
not completed configuring PCMacLAN yet, but it seems to be relatively
straight forward to configure it's AppleShare functions so that I can log-on
from my UMAX Pulsar (Euro S900). I have had problems with network response
from my ISP, when logging on from the Celvin, but at this time it looks as
if it is a server problem that my ISP is experiencing and not a problem with
the TCP/IP Dial Adapter on the Celvin.
Cheers,
Brian
