opt+cmd+shift+del will encourage a Mac to boot from something other than the
default drive. Holding the C key on boot will encourage a Mac to boot from
CD. Holding down the opt key should boot you into open firmware, allowing
you to select a boot volume.
However, a major drive problem can freeze a machine when the machine
attempts to mount the volume, even if it's not the boot volume. The
original advice about disconnecting the drive was sound.
