    It's not necessary to disconnect the hardrive because there is a 4 key
    pattern that disables the HD when depressed during booting. I believe
    it is apple-alt-control-delete but don't hold me to it. I learned it a
    few years ago when I had a problem like yours that turned out to be the
    motherboard {but under warranty :-} Maybe someone else can confirm the
    correct pattern.
