Do you have any peripherals attached to the machine? If so, pull them. Is
the machine trying to connect to any servers on boot? Trash AppleShare prep
and contents of the Servers folder (at root level of System folder). As a
test, you might try pulling any ethernet line attached to the machine. Are
you running 9.0.4? If not, I'd upgrade from any other 9.0.x. Any
third-party extensions/control panels running? Disable them (you can use
Extensions Manager to select an OS-only set), and if that solves your
problem, re-enable them one-by-one. Anything in the Startup Items folder
(also at root level of System folder)? If so, pull them and see if it
    helps.

Does the thing boot with extensions disabled (hold down Shift key on
startup)? If so, that'll let you get in and clean up.

Clearing PRAM (opt+cmd+p+r on startup) would be a good idea, as would
rebuilding desktop (OS will check for opt+cmd before mounting any volumes,
    including the boot volume).

You might also trash Finder prefs. If you can't get the machine to boot
after disconnecting all peripherals and network connections zapping the PRAM
and disabling extensions, it's time for a clean OS install. If that doesn't
do it, you've likely got a hardware problem on your hands. But I think
you'll resolve it before getting to this point.

    Good luck.
