    I would reinstall system 9 and then download the free OS 9.04 update and
    install it. Rebuild the desktop and reset the PRAM as well. About a
    30minutes exercise that should fix things up.

    It might be difficult to do given the problem you are experiencing - but you
    need to make sure that you have a backup! I've never lost files doing a
    system install but backups are insurance in case!
