    MVK,

My G-3 Laptop exhibits the same symptoms when a specific combination
    of extensions exists.

Start up the unit with extensions off (start-up with the shift key
    held down)...

...then begin to play with the extensions until you find your deadly
    combination.

With me it was those extensions related to AppleShare, FileSharing,
and my Farallon Wireless card.... ...to correct the problem I had
to adjust the AppleShare settings so that the computer would not try
to load the Farallon start-up files before the AppleShare
    extensions...

Hope this helps... I literally spent hours trying to figure out
what was going on... it was very frustrating... but the joy of
finally working through the problem was profound!
