    Hey Bob....

We've been testing the 3Com AirConnect stuff, which is 802.11b-compliant.
Their basestations and PCMCIA NICs work great in various laptops we've got
(although i'm still waiting on a firmware upgrade so i can turn on
encryption.) i tested and got the basestation working with a Lucent
WaveLAN (now named Orinoco) "Silver" card. Used it in both a Bronze
PowerBook G3 and an old Toshiba laptop.

The 3Com NICs don't have Mac or Linux drivers (FAQ says that a third-party
*might* provide drivers for the former, and that 3Com might consider support
    for the latter later.)

i have yet to test the AirPort cards with the AirConnect basestation,
however since the AirPort basestation is just a 486 with a Silver
Lucent WaveLan card in it, i don't think it should be a problem.
