    Hi Rick,

In the Windows 2000 Advanced Server installer, I installed the Services for Macintosh. I installed the Appletalk protocol in Network and Dialup connections. Then, I went to Start, Administrative Tools, Configure Your Server, File Server, Start the Shared Folder wizard. I selected the folder to share and gave it a name. Under Accessible from the following clients, I clicked "Apple Macintosh."

PC Mac Lan for Win 98 sucks. If I tried to copy a file with a file name longer than 31 characters, it gave an error something like "The folder doesn't exist, do you want to create it?" and it wouldn't copy the file. Also, when I printed with PC Mac Lan to my Laserwriter, it would print everything OK, but at the end it printed a blank page and another page with a postscript error "Error Offending command..." Win 2K prints fine to my Laserwriter.

A few things to note about using Appleshare on a PC: You need Windows 2000 Advanced Server and you need to format your drive NTFS. Also, Win 2K comes with hefty RAM requirements: 128MB suggested, 256MB recommended. If you want to save money and use less RAM, you may want to install Win NT 4 instead. I think it has the same Appleshare services as Win 2K.

Now, my questions is: Do I have to run Appleshare IP on my Mac in order for my PC with Win2K to connect? Or is there some way in Win2K to connect to a regular Appleshare server?

    Regards,

    Daniel

I ask because we have been running Appleshare IP 6.3.1 on our G3 server, and connecting PCs to it with only moderate success: Lot's of crashes and problems with Win 98. We are considering upgrading the PCs to Win2K.
