Windows 98 is far easier then it used to be but this is one area where
the Macs are still easier to configure.

Yes you probably could install a second SCSI car but I don't think you
need to. If your Adaptec card has BIOS then you can startup the SCSI
Select Utility that's built into it. I forget the hot key combination
but it usually says when you first boot up. Disable the SCSI reset on
the SCSI id belonging to the the scanner and see if that helps. It may
be referred to as SCSI Initialization or something to that effect.
There may be some other settings as well that may need adjusting. Just
be sure to make a note of where everything is set to start with so you
can always restore to the factory default settings.

We used to have an Agfa scanner that would be doing a SCSI reset upon
bootup so when the WinNT OS was starting up it wouldn't see the scanner
out there even though the Adaptec card would see it when booting up.
Turning off the SCSI reset for the SCSI id that the scanner was set to
allow the scanner to stay ready so that the WinNT OS could see it. I
suspect that your scanner may be doing the same thing.
