I agree 100% with Ken about Win2k: It's quite handy and robust. BUT, when
you're developing you need to dual (or more!) boot back into NT4 for
testing the product, i.e. you'll want an NT4/SP3 and NT4/SP5 installation.

Richard is also quite right about using an older server as a reliable
workstation... Sunbelt Software has a link to Dell off their home page for
    factory refurb servers & workstations.

However, I would recommend taking a close look at the IBM IntelliStation
line, especially the IntelliStation M series: These are almost as sturdy as
a server, but with better video as well as being in a more user friendly
case. Plus, IBM's tech support is much better than Dell's, anyway.

Just my 2 cents from the trenches...
            Dan

PS: I eat my own dog food, too: I'm writing this on my IBM IntelliStation
ZPro; and it's sitting next to my IBM Netfinity 5500 rackmount server.
