Dear Scott,
Actually, you have a gem with running AppleShare Server 4.0.2 (not
PPC-only 4.2) on a Quadra 840AV... And I'll tell you in a moment how to
double it's speed again!
I've actually set up a few 840AV's as AppleShare 4.0.2 servers running
System 7.5.1, and they work extremely well because of the AV Quadra's I/O
throughput. The only bottleneck is the 10 megabit ethernet.
At MacWorld, I learned that if you are running AppleShare 4.x Server you
can double the speed with just one minor addition: Load Open Door Networks'
ShareWay IP Standard Edition ($249). You WILL need to load System 7.5.5 &
Open Transport 1.1.2 or later [Preferably 7.6.1 if you are running
AppleShare 4.2.2 on a PowerMac], and you'll have an instant, unlimited
client, *robust* AFP/IP file server without the hassles or major-league
Apple upgrade costs!
Hope this helps!
