I know I like to see my name mentioned when I respond to someones call
for help, so I would like to thank Bruce Johnson, Paul Frankenstein,
Thomas Hetzel and Michael Friesen directly and openly.

Thanks for the info on NT and OSX. As it appears to be that this last
company I called in to look at the server finally did it. It was so
simple. Instead of letting the network cards auto negotiate, I told them
how to communicate, and that seems to have fixed it. I looks like I will
be sticking with Novell. I'm pretty happy with that because I didn't
want to move to a M$ product. You probably know how it gets when you
work on a problem so long you can't see the easy things. The number one
reason why I didn't go into electronics after going to a trade school
    during high school.

I did forgot to ask about Appleshare, but oh well. I do have a
Quadr840a/v running Appleshare 4.2, that I got up and running with in a
half hour just in case this problem would go on too long, and to learn
about it. The reason I have been using personal file sharing was that I
    didn't not have a 2GB limit.

Total: 1 NT works well, just keep up on patches.
            2 NT bad, switched/ing to 1 Appleshare, 1 Linux
1 OS X point some things out, no thought one way or the other.

    Original Message

I've spent the past few hours search MS's site and others about info on
NT and such and would like some real world experiences/suggestions.
    Please.

Here's my story, I have a Novell 3.12 server that is working like a champ
and am not replacing. I also have a Novell 4.10 server that I just
upgraded with new hardware (Y2K) and have been down for a month. First
it was one problem and then another. I have even had two different
companies out to look at it with no help, and am getting ready to call in
a third. We use it primarily for Mac File services. Approximately 30
Macs. We are in a DTP environment. Fonts reside on the server and are
launched from the server. Novell is up and running, and then I start to
restore files back onto the server and everything works, this time, and
then the next time it will boot me out of the server, with no one else
connected, and the server will goto 100% utilization. It will then not
let me down the server properly.

Right now I've had enough and need to get something up and working. I
have been circumventing the situation by use a couple of Macs with large
hard drives connected to them with personal file sharing activated.
    Slowwwww and inadequate.

I am now thinking about switching to NT. We already have new hardware
and will just need to purchase the OS. OS X on the other hand would
involve new everything, but it would work...

Any suggestions and/or comments on experiences would be greatly
    appreciated.
