FYI, there's also a SP6a (sort of). It's been a mess but the following
message spells most of it out and provides lots of links. Note that
SFMATALK.SYS is one of the updated files. I haven't installed SP6 (or 6a)
on a server yet so I don't know how it might affect SFM.

Microsoft has prepared a single hotfix which, when installed, takes an
SP6 machine and turns it into an SP6a machine. This means you do not
need to get the complete SP6a download to get to SP6a.

In their FAQ on SP6a, found at;

http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/support/faqs/SP6faq.asp

they point out that developers of Winsock applications who wish to
check whether a machine is SP6 or SP6a can check a particular registry
key. This key is populated *either* by installing SP6a itself, or by
applying the Q246009 hotfix that takes an SP6 machine to SP6a. From
this I'm assuming it means that there is no difference between
SP6+Q246009 hotfix and SP6a.

The Q246009 hotfix (to take an SP6 machine to SP6a) can be downloaded
via;

X86:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntsp/Patch/6.0a/NT4/EN-US/Q246
009i.EXE

Alpha:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntsp/Patch/6.0a/ALPHA/EN-US/Q2
46009a.EXE

It contains the updated AFD.sys, as well as an updated WINVER.EXE,
CONVLOG.EXE, and SFMATALK.SYS (see the FAQ for explanations of why the
other files where included).

After you've either run the hotfix, or a completely new update with
the full SP6a, you can then run the updated WINVER.EXE and it should
show you something like;

Microsoft(R) Windows NT (R)
Version 4.0 (Build 1381: Service Pack 6)
Copyright (C) 1981-1996 Microsoft Corp
Revised Service Pack 6a

Indicating you're now running SP6a. If that last line is missing,
you're running SP6.

The SP download page, with links to both the Q246009 hotfix and the
full SP6a download, is available via;

http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/SP6/allSP6.a
sp

SP6a is for any edition of NT except Terminal Server. According to the
FAQ, NT 4.0 TS is still at SP4 (although I had at least one report
that TS SP5 was available) and says that TS SP5 will be available
shortly (without any of the problems SP6 saw, we presume).

You'll notice many references to SP6 in the FAQ, don't be misled, it
has been updated to reflect the realities of SP6a (seems MS would
rather keep referring to SP6 as much as possible). Fact is, SP6a is
really just another name for the Q246009 hotfix, rather than a
completely new SP.

Hopefully I have all of this correct this time...;-]
