So characters \/:*?<> are invalid in Windows (95) but what about High-ASCII
8-bit characters?

I've noticed that some 8-bit characters like äö (a or ö with umlaut) are OK
in hybrid CDs (made with Toast 3.5.6).

However, some 8-bit characters like the bullet "*" don't transliterate from
Mac to Win. I can move and copy these files with Win 95 but if I try to
open them from the desktop (or other folder) to MS Word 7.0 there is an
error 1177 "filename or path is not valid". I can open them from Word,
however. Weird.

TIP: How to copy long filenames from ISO Win CDs? A: Read the CD with
Virtual PC and drag the files to the Mac side. If the filename is <31
characters, VPC 3.0 gives the correct type/creator to the file. (I just
noticed that if the filename is >32 characters, it is not possible to copy
those files to a shared folder, only directly to the Mac side - smells like
a bug...).
