This is wrong, Dan. OS 8.1 will run on '040 Macs; OS 8.5 is the first
version of the MacOS that will not run on *any* 68k-based Mac, as
John Welch noted.

Just because VM still requires a big block of disk space doesn't mean
that it hasn't been significantly improved.

I don't think that the completely rewritten, PowerPC native Finder in
OS 8.0 qualifies as "bugfixes" and borrowed shareware apps.

Sherlock wasn't borrowed from Copernic; they're very different
programs. Actually, Sherlock has its (distant) origins in "Find
File", which began as a shareware program called "Find Pro III"
authored by Bill Monk.

You really should get your facts straight instead of presenting your
opinions as the Gospel. It is simply inaccurate to present the *huge*
evolution of the MacOS since 7.6 as a series of bug fixes. I happen
know the MacOS quite well, having been a beta tester since 7.5.3.

But thanks again to Dan Schwartz, all this discussion is degenerating
into either Mac-bashing or a Mac vs. Windows debate, which is what
the list is supposed to avoid.
