The operating system you are running currently is the fastest operating system for the 5400s. We are currently downgrading our 5400s from 8.6 because they are so slow. If you do upgrade the 9250s OS and not the workstations OS, make sure you have the same AppleShare running on the workstations. An easy way to lock down the desktop is to remove the Control Panels. They aren't needed for the computer to run, just to change the settings. Either put the Control Panels on the server or on a floppy for easy access. This won't keep people from throwing away or moving items in the System Folder though. The best way to do this is with ANAT.

A previous question of how to lock down an elementary school lab came back
with many people telling me to upgrade to OS 9.

Currently the lab consists of 20 Power Mac 5400/180 computers with 40 Mb of
RAM and System 7.6.1 and a Mac 9250 server with System 7.6.1 and Web and
File Services running.

Are the machines going to work well with OS9 and will I have to upgrade the
server too?  Or will I be able to lock down the desktop settings without
using the server to handle logons and etc?
