[WinMac] Exchange POP: "the requested item could not be found"

Folks -

Has anyone ever gotten the following error attempting to RETRieve
email from an Exchange server via POP: "the requested item could not
be found"?

Actually, it yields the same error for a TOP command, so that when
one of these messages is in your mailbox, it must be DELEted before
you can get to the rest of the mail. (And it can also cause the
repeated refetch of any messages before the one generating the error
- until it's deleted.)

The problem exists with several POP clients (ex: Emailer, Outlook
Express and Eudora), and indeed, shows the same when telnet'ing in
and manually issuing commands to the POP server, so it's not
client-dependant. I doubt whether it's OS-dependant either, but I
only know for sure of instances with Mac clients.

FWIW, here's an opening response from a server exhibiting this problem:

"+OK Microsoft Exchange POP3 server version 5.5.2611.0 ready"

Does that version tell anyone anything? (I'm a former admin, but not
of Exchange.)

More data: Such problem messages are apparently retrievable via
non-POP means, such a web-based systems (presumably using native
Exchange mechanisms). Further, using one of these non-POP messages,
it's possible to forward the problem message to yourself - which
seems to confirm that it's not the content of the message that's the
problem.

Any ideas/info most appreciated; thanks!

- Marc
