Dear List,

At my place of employment, I together with three other co-workers use Macs
in an otherwise Windows establishment. Therefore the IT department are to
say the least very uncooperative.

Recently an Intranet was set up which we are meant to access via DCHP. Try
as I might no-one seems to know how the Macs in my department can be
connected to this Intranet.

Can anyone help? I either need to know the answer to my prayers (Macs for
everyone - sorry only joking(unfortunately)), or the correct questions to
ask.

Cheers, in anticipation,

Geoff Cross

Assuming you have MacOS 8.x:

[ if any of these steps are "impossible", you may need to install
OpenTransport from the System Installation CD ]

+ make sure the mac is physically connected to the network
+ open the "TCP/IP" control panel
+ Make sure to select "Connect via: Ethernet" and
                "Configure: Using DHCP Server"
+ Press clover-I (or select Get Info from the "File" menu)
+ Write down the Hardware Address
+ it will look like "00 05 02 XX XX XX"
+ It may be necessary for you to give that address to your network
administrators (it might not be depending on how they have DHCP
          set up).

+ When they have everything setup, reboot your macintosh.

+ You should be on your way...

Hope this helps,

yuji

Go to TCP-IP control panel and turn on DHCP server. Under options have DHCP
selected to turn on at start up this will make the startup process much
faster. Also make sure apple talk is set for the ethernet. The alternative
would be to reeserve a couple of TCP/IP addresses and give your mac's static
addresses.

I've set up a network of 10 Windows and about 30 MAC's no problems at all
with either platform and DHCP ser ver.

Jeff Nehring.
