This is because 95/98 don't come with LPR capabilities (Microsoft TCP/IP
Printing Services is what MS calls it). But you can use some shareware
software like ACITS Spooler or WLPR spooler. However, printing through an
NT server is a lot better solution since youonly have to troubleshoot 1
machine when it's not printing.

Here's the trick: contrary to whatever you've heard about win 95/98 and
long file names, when sharing a printer to these machines make sure your
printer SHARED name does not exceed 12 characters (I would stay within 8
to be sure). We found out about this at work after a lot of head
scratching... And of course make sure it's shared properly and that no
security settinga are in place (by default a shared printer on NT gives
the EVERYONE group the PRINT right.

that version had problems... if you still have that driver update it with
the latest Hard Drive Setup from Apple (I think 1.7.2???)

Dan,

The ASIP 6.2 upgrade solves many of problems with 6.1.1 (most especially the
LPR print server bug... no more crashes every 4 days...yeah!!). Also ASIP
6.2 adds some cool new features. My favorite is the new additions to the
anti-spam feature of the mail server like the use of the Real Time Black
Hole list (sweet).

However, the PowerPoint bug has not been fixed. This is simply because it
is not an Apple bug, but a Microsoft bug. PowerPoint has problems writing
and reading files from any NOS, not just ASIP. The only work around is to
save the file locally, then copy it manually to the server.

Does anyone know if this bug was fixed in Office 2000? I am just curious, I
will not be upgrading our site until for at least one year.

Just a tidbit to those of you having your Macs print to an Unix based LPR server:

If you are printing to a Unix LPR Print server, esp. a Solaris Server running NIS+, MAKE SURE that all of your Macs are in the DNS table and the NIS+ host table. If not, the print server will reject your print job, due to "unknown host", and the Mac will refuse to print from ANY lpr printer. The only notification on the Mac side is that the Desktop printers will print the first job, and then queue all subsequent jobs, but none will be processed. Upon a restart, the first job will print, and any subsequent jobs will remain queued, as the first job causes the print server error. I have reported this to Apple Developer Tech support, so this can be fixed in Sonata, and maybe a patch issued for 8.6/8.5.X, et al.
