First off, I work for Compaq in my day job so I do have a bias. Personally
I would not build a system, I would buy one. Why? Support. If you build a
FrankenWintel you could be asking for trouble later on. Granted a name
brand is more expensive than rolling your own, but at least you will get a
box which is full of parts guaranteed to work together which lowers the TCO
(total costy of ownership).

Just my 2 cents.

I am using Connectix Virtual PC with Win/95 on my PMac 9500 with a 225 mHz
upgrade card. '95 runs just as fast as NT does on my office 166 mHz
Pentium. I'm using it as a base for a bunch of amateur radio programs which
use com ports heavily and it works with 4 out of the 5 programs I've tried
it with.

I don't work for a vendor or a reseller and I agree with you
completely. The support issues far outweigh any potential savings
for a mission critical server that is required to run your business.

wow! I would have never, in a thousand years thought of that! I know
Photoshop (and other apps) require quicktime to show the preview, but a
Server???

Thanks a lot I'll try it as soon as possible.

If you liked that, you'll love www.macfixit.com a very good web site for
Mac problems. Also run, don't walk, to get Ted Landau's "Sad Macs, Bombs
and other Disasters". A big yellow book filled from cover to cover with
incredible details on almost all Mac models ever made and some very good
(even obscure) troubleshooting tips. The language of the book is very
approachable for begginers and delves deeper for the geeks as well.

(I have no affilitation with the book nor do I get a commision for a
sale, it's just a wonderful resource).

Well, these guys DO have a dual controller. So I'm not sure that what
they told you is true. They're saying that the CD duplicator's ID is
conflicting with the #7 ID of the cpu in the Mac, is that it?

ATM Deluxe 4.0 had problems with Photoshop and Illustrator, etc. But I
don't know exactly all the symptoms it creates. Could be this in one of
them. At work on a B&W G3 I get crashes and freezes ocasionally with
Photoshop and Illustrator (I AM running ATM 4.0 until I can get the new
one) but haven't see that -42 error yet...

Also, check www.macintouch.com for 8.6 specific problems, could be you
have another incompatible file.
