Hello. This is slightly off-topic, but was mentioned here "recently"

I've got a frined with a Performa 5200 whom I'm helping to get it on the
internet with a cable modem. To make a long story short, MacTCP doesn't
seem to work with the DHCP server that our cable provider has and I was
wondering if anyone knew of an alternative that we might use. I know
someone asked the same question here and was given a bunch of options, so
I'm asking again :)

I can't use TCP/IP because we can't load OPen Transport on this machine
due to a hardware limitation (needs replacemente of the cache/rom DIMM).
We might get around to doing that, but for now he wants to surf. I can't
remember if there is a way to run Classic Networking on system 7.6.1 and
above, right now we're on 7.5.1.

Thank you

Why not get the machine fixed, for free, under the extended warranty from
Apple?

In the interim, can you hard-wire the IP address that the DHCP server is
supplying (call tech support for it) and work that way? Unless the cable
company has a very short lease life, you could work this way for a while. I
did when I first signed up about 8 months ago, and just lost my first IP
address about a month ago, and switched to DHCP. Of course, I leave my cable
modem Mac on 24/7.

I don't have an answer why Classic Networking doesn't work, but OT sure
works fine on this machine for me.

I have a 5200, upgraded to 48MB RAM and a 2GB hard drive, running MacOS
8.5.1, OT 2.0.1 and Sustworks IPNetRouter with DHCP to a cable modem, with 2
NICs, serving 2 PowerBooks and 2 Wintel Pentium laptops. The only quirk is
that I use static IP addresses for the local (192.168.x.x) side of the
fence, and I have to hard-wire the numeric IP addresses of the cable
company's (Shaw) Proxy and Name Servers in each machine.

The machine SHOULD be crashing left and right due to the cache bug- this was Apple's darkest day (the 5200) and the fix is free at any Apple authorized service center.

Interesting problem... Here's a few considerations to think about:

Open Transport will run on System 7.1 as well as System 7.5.2 & up, but NOT System 7.5 & 7.5.1...

P5200's had a lot of hardware problems, and Apple had motherboard replacement programs. These same problems occurred on the P62xx and Performa 6300 machines - But not the Performa 6360;

If memory serves me correctly, some brands of L2 cache worked, and some didn't. You can yank the cache and max out the RAM, and the performance should be about the same - Especially if you have File Mapping disabled (Virtual Memory disabled);

There was no System 7.5.4. Systems 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 have the Network Selector Switch, allowing you to switch between Classic networking and Open Transport;

MacOS 7.6 & up has Open Transport only;

AppleTalk 58.1.5 and MacTCP 2.0.6 were the last versions of Classic networking. AppleTalk 58.1.5 is available on the NSI-ZM 1.5.1 installer floppy.

Hope this helps! Dan
