It's a MS Proxy Security setting. It's happening because the
administrators of the server are locking it down so that only
authorized people can access the internet. MS Proxy Server is
designed to work with Windows clients and use the username and
password that a Windows user uses to log onto their computer. It
isn't designed to work with non-Windows clients very well and this is
a result of that.
It may be possible to fix the problem on the server, but I
don't know. Turning the authorization off and allowing anyone to use
the server will fix it, but the administrators probably don't want
that.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The world's only fully buzzword compliant

Steven,

The startup screen should be the logo.sys file in the root directory. Check
out http://www.nucleus.com/~kmcmurdo/win95logo.html for instructions and
links to animated logos etc.

I think Norton Utilities "Genie" included a feature to change the startup
screen...?

Michael,

FWIW:

I ran a LAN with Wingate for a proxy and it worked great. NT server w/30+
stations including Macs. I've subscribed to the Wingate List. The support
is great. There seems to be a lot of issues with MS Proxy in multi-platform
LANs. I've never seen a comparison with Wingate or Sygate where MS Proxy
warranted it's expense and maintenance overhead.

It's not just the Macs, it's anything other than MS Windows! I have a
Linux (Redhat) server that doesn't go through either, nor does the SGI
box we have, or the Solaris workstation (although I haven't REALLY fussed
with these to get them to work, apart from setting all the proxy
configurations I don't know what else to do. It's odd because they can
surf, HTTP, but no FTP. Then again I am told that MS Proxy is only an
HTTP (and SOCKS?) proxy, everything through port 80).

Check the authentication method on the proxy server. I'm not sure about
proxy, but on IIS for example, if the authentication is anything other
than Basic Authentication (maybe NT Challenge / Response) the Macs won't
go through. In your case the Macs are going through, but I would still
check it. Also check to see if between the Mac and the proxy server (and
then the outside if necessary) there are more than one authenticating
server... For example an SQL database that you need to go through or some
such other "nonsense" ;)

And finally make sure that the proxy server has 'HTTP Keep Alives'
checked on. I'm pretty sure MS's proxy server has that option. I can
check on Monday.

This is all speculation, just ideas, so, sorry if it sounds ludicrous.

Speaking on online shopping, I do a lot of it and have never gotten
burned. On the other hand, I got $2000, the limit on a check card, stolen
from me when it was shipped to me from the bank...

That's not the point of this post though, check out www.outpost.com for
online shopping policices, privacy, etc. They are one of the best online
shopping centers and now have free shipping and lots of other goodies.
They would be a good resource for your hunt.

Good luck

        Richard:

Did you run the Wingate software on the NT Server, or on a
separate box?
