We are having the same problem here as well with MS Proxy 2.0. I'm told that
Mac OS 8.6 will be coming out soon that will have better support for SOCKS.
I'm going to wait if 8.6 will solve any problems. I'm in a situation where
if it doesn't work on the Mac then it's percieved as a Mac problem not a
problem with the proxy server.

I would like to install WebStar on a Mac and have the Mac clients go through
that but the department that handles this will probably fear a different
platform other than total Microsoft.

[moderator: this is far off-topic, but may be of interest]

Greetings all,

This may be a bit off topic, but i'm hoping someone can point me in the
right direction.

I'm trying to garner some clues about the safety (or otherwise) of
ecommerce. My university refuses to purchase over the net, and this is
becoming more awkward all the time. When challenged, our finance people
have said that if convincing evidence is available to the effect that
ecommerce is no less safe than face-to-face use of corporate credit cards,
they will do it.

Where can I find evidence? I've checked plenty of sites but mostly find
argument, not evidence. Any ideas?

Regards,

Lesley Vita

Once again- I have dealt with plenty proxy servers before, and the only
one I have ever had problems with is M$'s proprietary stuff.

Unlike DHCP, however, I have never set up or administered a proxy server.
Nonetheless it is once again clear the M$ believes it can modify standards
to its liking.

This is slightly off topic, but here goes. On a Mac, you can make a graphic
appear at startup by calling it StartupScreen and putting into the System
folder. I was wondering what is the same process for Win98?

I am trying to debug a pub;lic access computer that currently displays a
"Cover Girl" magazine ad instead of the Win logo on startup. I have found
three files called logos.sys logow.sys and (logo.oem?) that are all the
windows logo. They all seem to be where and what they should be. There does
not seem to be a reference to any other file in the ini files or the
msdos.sys file.

Am I missing an obvious place to look for this type of file? Also, I am not
having any luck trying to run dow the graphics file for the ad. An ideas
appreciated.

Cordially,

Steven Thomas

Hi,

I have been asked by a client to find out about an issue he has with his Mac's and their NT Proxy server. Every time they go to a page via Explorer it asks for a user name and password. Even if you have remember password checked, the box will still come up. When he clicks ok, the page he wants appears. Sometimes it even comes up during a download of the page.

Is this a Mac setting, a Proxy setting or a bug. The pc's don't do it!!

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Best wishes

Michael.

G'Day, Mate!

Well, it sort of is "on topic," because most all of us buy over the Internet.

Basically, fraud is fraud. If someone is hell-bent on committing fraud, it doesn't make any difference whether it's over the phone, in person, or over the Internet.

For example, my father's business had an Exxon credit card. One day, an attendant took the card for a $12 gas purchase and "swiped" it through 5 times. He then put the extra $48 in cash in his pocket. It didn't show up until the bill arrived and was checked.

At least with eCommerce, there is a written record of the transaction. This is especially true if instead of using a browser-based SSL form you send it in via PGP-encrypted eMail. There will be a message ID attached to the message, which is traceable.

Personally, I don't use encrypted eMail... What I do is write up and eMail my order with all the billing & shipping info... Everything EXCEPT the credit card number. I then put at the end that I'll call them with the credit card number.

-------

By the way, a 13 year old kid from Haddonfield, New Jersey - About a mile from where I live - was the kid who placed over $4 million in bids on eBay! His mother was on the local news last night (WCAU TV10, Philadelphia).

Cheers! Dan
