oops sent this one w/ the wrong subject, incase ya
missed it here's my ?

a friend of mine asked me to help him set up a small
network in his apt. (how do i always seem to get
suckered into these things?) he has two pc's, and one
mac. i've suggested dave, and i think that's the way
we are going to go on the mac side, now my question is
on settin up things on the pc side. he has one wintel
NT computer that has a cable modem, and an extra
ethernet card, and the other wintel NT system has an
ethernet card. both are running nt workstaion afaik.
he bought a hub, and some cables. so all the hardware
is all set up. but how do we go about getting the two
pc's to share folders w/ each other? or will they
just see each other on the network if we give them
some ip address, and pray?
bonus question: how to get all 3 computers to be able
to use the cable modem? i know if he had it hooked up
tothe mac it would be a good place for ipnetrouter.
i've set that up before with much luck. is there a
comparable product on the winNT side?
thanks for all the help :]

Tom,

One thing to try:

Since Stuffit is so ubiquitous (everywhere present) in the Mac World
(and getting that way in the Wintel world too perhaps) . . .

It is possible to have several copies/versions of Stuffit applications
and utilities (Stuffit Expander, DropStuff w/Expander Enhancer, Stuffit
Deluxe, Drop Segment).

The Installer for Netscape also comes with its own Stuffit Expander
version and installer.

Each version can have its own set of preferences.

Be sure to set the preferences for all the various copies/versions to
the same settings. This way, no matter which one is trying to do the
job (in the background), it will convert the archive the same in each version.

Also, "Internet Config" can get in on the act. Internet Config can take
over many different apps preferences unbeknownst to you (if it has been
set to handle the chores).

Netscape can be configured to use Internet Config's settings. If so,
then you must set your preferences in Internet Config and also in the
various Stuffit versions you may have lying around.

Hope that helps.

Actually, only DropStuff has it's own custom preferences=20
stored inside itself. All the other use standard preferences files=20
in the prefs folder - so all copies on the machine would use the same=20
prefs.

        Netscape doesn't support IC :(.

I just rejoined the list yesterday to ask this very question! Just to muddy
the waters, I can offer a suggestion, although I still have the problem.

>If I login as an administrator, I don't experience this problem,
>furthermore, if I login as a user from some other mac I don't seem to
>experience the problem either.

Logging in as administrator always works for me, too. But when a user can't
login from one machine, he can't login from any other, either. So I feel
safe eliminating *specific* client Macs as causing the problem.

Some things I've tried that seem to work: Recreating the Mac volumes seems
to help temporarily. In another case, a user suddenly couldn't close the
window or see files in a specific folder. I created a new folder *on a Mac*
logged in as administrator, set the permissions for the user's group, and
the problem disappeared. But for months, this folder was fine for this
user. So what changed? Arrggghh! Also, try turning off Calculate Folder
Sizes.

The "hang" problem is covered under the topic "Microsoft Windows NT Server
3.51, 4.0 -- Macs "hang" while connected to server" at
<http://www.macwindows.com/servtips.html>, but there's no mention of the
problem going away when users login with administrator privileges. Since
this issue seems directly related to setting permissions on directories, I
have a few questions of my own. Can a "group" (set up in User Manager)
become "corrupted"? Can a directory's ACL become "corrupted"? I've tried
deleting user accounts and making new ones, and resetting permissions on
folders (from the server side in Explorer), but the only thing that made a
noticeable difference is creating folders on a Mac and setting permissions
there. I'm willing to recreate the directory structure and reapply
permissions, but I'd like to know if I'm even on the right track.

Our setup: one Compaq Proliant Pentium Pro (160 meg RAM) running NT Server
4.0 SP3 with a Compaq NIC and two 3Com Super Stack II hubs (a 12 and a 24
port). Client machines are mostly Macs (running 8.1 with AppleShare 3.8)
and some Windows clients (running Windows 95). There are typically 3-7 Mac
users connected.

All suggestions welcome! Thanks!

It is sp4, and yes, it was installed after sp3, on the other hand, if I
startup my mac from the System CD Rom, I am able to login w/no problems;
but mys mac's syfol has the same networking software version that the CD
rom has, and I even replaced all associated preference files (appletalk,
appleshareprep, ASLM preferences) in my mac with the ones on the cd rom. It
is almost disturbing. Almost as if it doesn't like my mac:(

thanks!

Thanks to all that offered to help with the massive Outlook download. I
now have the file.

Make sure your Web server is set up to serve .bin mime types...that's probably what's happening. I've run into this problem before.

I think that's exactly the problem. Thomas Leahey sent me an email this morning telling me...

So it sounds as if the problem is at the web server.

Thanks to all who replied!
