[WinMac] UPS [WAS: RE: Flashing Question Mark On Startup]

Dear Dan Wright (and my other Blind CC'd friends),

For the Mac, at this point nothing, since they are only used for
workstations... And I tell my customers to NOT plug their monitors into the
UPS. One of the nice features of the Mac is a "graceful headless" shutdown
by hitting the power key, then hitting Return until the Mac goes down...

[When I discuss platform stability for mission-critical servers, this
(among other issues) is why I recommend NT's Services for Macintosh (SFM)
over anything Apple offers... This, and NT's Native Transactional File
System (NTFS)...]

For the x86 platform, I use Tripp-Lite's software for the few windoze
95/98 boxes; and for AlphaNT and NT/x86 I use the UPS Service to monitor a
serial port.

What is important to keep in mind is that some UPS' use "dry contact"
(relay) closures, while others use SCR (polarity sensitive) contact closures.

Also, not all DB9-DB9 cables are equal... Watch out for the pinout!!

Below is the reply I received (between the *****) from APC
<http://www.apcc.com> when I asked about their iMac/B&W support for their
USB - based backups:

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for your continued interest in APC products.

APC recognizes the customer demand for a UPS which can be attached to an
Apple computer via the USB port, as
well as, software for gracefully shutting down the Apple computer in the
event of a power failure. However, our
solution, PowerChute for Macintosh, currently functions with APC UPSs which
have a serial port. As always,
any APC UPS can be used with any Apple Macintosh computer to provide
back-up power in the event of a power
disturbance

Are you planning to have Apple OS-X and/or MacOS 8.5.1 - compatible
software for the USB (Universal Serial Bus) version of the BackUps Pro? The
reason for this is that the blue & white G3 minitower Macs and AppleShare
Servers released in January do NOT have any (RS-422) serial ports... Unlike
any previous tower or desktop Macs, all they have is USB (like the iMac).

Thank you!
