I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. The ReadMe for Microsoft UAM
includes the following:

User Authentication A user authentication module (UAM) is a software program that prompts users
for an account name and password before they log on to a server. Apple’s
Chooser has a standard UAM built in, which uses the clear-text password
method of security. Microsoft Authentication offers an additional level of security because it
encrypts, or scrambles, a password so that it cannot be monitored as it is
sent over the network. If the system administrator for the computer running
Windows NT Server has determined that encryption is an important security
measure, you may be asked to use Microsoft Authentication when you log on to
the server.

An NT Server can be configured to require encrypted passwords and the
Microsoft UAM module is the ApplShare add-on which handles that interface on
the Mac end. It only comes into play during log-on. Access privileges
(read, write, modify) are a separate matter altogether and wouldn't seem to
be affect by the use of this special UAM.
