[WinMac] Files *jumping* around in view by name on mac clients

Problem:
When we open a directory in the finder, the list of files keeps changing for
the first few seconds, making it very difficult to open the file you want.
The list starts appearing, then extra files appear, then they dissapear,
then you see multiple copies of some files and so on, all so quickly that it
is difficult to see what's happening. This continues for 1 to 15 seconds.
Sometimes, some files remain invisible. on the macs, but are there when you
look from a WIN98 client or from the server itself.

Environment:
NT4(SP3) server hosting the folders, Mac and PC clients. The problem only
occours on the macs, and I think only on the system 8.5 macs. The NT Server
is multihomed with IP forwarding between a mac ethernet card, and a PC
ethernet card (on seperate subnets to reduce network traffic). Macs on
appletalk, PC's on TCP/IP
