"pata" means foot in spanish. That is the name of one of my 2 dogs
(boxers). My brother and I were kidding around one day saying that it
would be funny to name a dog "pata" (I used to live in Venezuela where
they speak spanish) since the very first thing people did when coming up
to a dog was to say "pata, pata" for the dog to shake its paw.

So when I got Pata, that's exactly what I named her and it was very funny
to see her give people that quizzical look that only dogs can give when
she was sitting there and they were calling her name. She was probably
thinking "can't this idiot see I'm already here?" ;)

So to get her to shake we just say "foot"

Of course, now that we live in the States, people don't get it. Oh well,
maybe our next dog will be named foot...
