As our last Novell server passes into memory, I remember with fondness...

Very stable, on both sides, at least under Netware 3.12. The downside was that
Novell's Appletalk (agian in v3.12) was based on an old and very chatty
implementation of Appletalk. Lots of packets going around saying 'Hi, I'm
here!'. We had two main problems: the chattiness, but that was when the whole
building was sharing 10 mbit of bandwidth and our server was a 486/33 with 32
megs of ram (a loooong time ago) and playing 'turn off the Appletalk devices'
whenever we had to restrart the router, so it would be the seed router for
Appletalk. This was (and remains) a big problem with appletalk on campus.

We _never_ had other problems with the Mac end of things under Netware. In
fact, we rarely had problems with the PC end of Netware, we just outgrew our
license, and NT was a heck of a lot cheaper, we had some critical apps that
moved to NT, and at the time, thought we could do things we wanted to do
easier under NT.

Had we known then what we know now, we'd have gone to a single NT box runing
those NT-specific apps, and gone with Linux and Samba for file and print
service on the other servers we have. We've finally gotten the NT servers
reasonably stable, but there are still inexplicable things going on.

Of course, my boss, based in part on his early negative experiences with Macs
and ATalk on Netware didn't want to turn on Mac services on the new NT servers
("We're going IP Only!"), so we had to go get and install DAVE so the macs
could even see the servers...:-(

(I still might convince him to go to CAP or netatalk now that they support
ASIP...we almost certainly will if we end up with more Macs in the building)
