[WinMac] Retrospect [WAS:Re: -- Freezing when copying over the network]

This isn't the first time Retrospect has been implicated... Retrospect
3.0 did the same thing with AppleShare Server 4.2; and was fixed with v3.0A.

I find this backup software behavior troubling... NTBackup can do the same
thing. Below is a quote from Paul Bunn <mailto:paul@ultrabac.com> of
UltraBac... Note carefully the second sentence in the second (message)
paragraph:

SP4 introduces a new feature to the kernel where the system logs that it is
up and operational every-so-often (determined by registry entry - default is
five minutes). It's important to disable this feature if you are running in
a laptop type application where it is undesirable for the disks to be
accessed frequently. The point of this update is so that on a system
reboot, the system can determine when the system was brought down
improperly. Q194749 has full details.

So, most likely here ntbackup is causing your machine to BSOD and you have
enabled automatic reboots. It's actually common for a backup application to
cause a machine to crash because it places stress on the cpu, i/o and memory
with many interrupts/sec and context switches. Make sure that control panel
/ system / startup/shutdown is set correctly to write an entry in the
eventlog -- you should see the STOP information which will be useful in
diagnosing _why_ ntbackup is crashing your system.

>> AppleShare MMgr INIT
>> The AppleShare Memory Manager INIT extension is provided to AppleShare
IP customers. This extension resolves a condition where an AppleShare IP
server may randomly freeze. This can affect any AppleShare IP 5.0.x and 6.0
server running Mac OS 7.6, 7.6.1, 8.0 or 8.1. A cosmetic indicator of this
problem may be seen in the "About this Computer" window, where the Mac OS
would appear to use 3.9 GB of memory. Please note that the AppleShare
Memory Manager Init does not fix this cosmetic indicator. The freeze
condition has been reported to occur most often when Retrospect is running
on the AppleShare IP server. However, this is not the only server software
configuration under which this may occur. The AppleShare Memory Manager
INIT will only work if AppleShare IP server software is installed.
