MacOS 8.5 now automatically checks the disk on start-up after a crash, so in
theory when a new user crashes their iMac, it will repair any troubles that
have been inflicted on the drive. Although Disk First Aid is not a perfect
utility, there are "Mac Experts" (Bob Levitus, Don Crabb, etc.) that say if
if DFA is allowed to run after every crash it will safeguard your drive
reasonably well. I use it and find them to be correct.

Most Mac heads won't see this right away (at least I didn't) because to turn
on the disk checking you must have the Shut Down Warning box checked in the
General Controls control panel. And who has that thing turned on any earlier
MacOS system?

Good luck

Nick
