Jeff,

Open word, go to page setup, select microsoft word from page attributes
(I'm using laserwriter 8 with OS8.1 here), select custom and enter the
dimensions of the paper size you want (eg A4 is 21 cm by 29.7 cm), click
default and you're in business. The size you entered will be the default
size for ALL documents, old and new. I dunno why it works, but it does.
