IE has almost always been faster than Netscape's browsers. With equal
versions, of course.

There are sites that are broken by both browsers; it sounds like you are
going to mostly sites that break IE. People love jumping on conspiracy
wagons on both sides, but mostly it seems like incomplete programming.

The biggest problem with IE 4.5 has been its memory hogging. For many
people it does not release memory. As it is used, it somehow uses more
and more RAM. Macfixit has been tracking this problem. Most other
problems were fairly specific to the individual and usually solved with
simple conflict resolution.
