I've got two URL's somewhere on ethernet crossover cabling and one of
them mentioned that on certain models, there has to be either a hub
present or another Mac already running ethernet on the network for
certain Macs to switch to ethernet. I'm guessing it is a 'feature'--one
which I find rather annoying. However, a simple hub will solve your
problem.

I'd be interested in knowing if the 'change them at the same time' works.
