        Dear Jim & Mike; & AlphaNT'ers:

        Please keep all of us on the WinMac list posted. Please go into as much
detail as possible -- Don't spare the bytes! -- so everyone who uses NT's
Services for Macintosh can exchange our experiences.

--> AlphaNT'ers: If you don't use or support NT/Server's Services for
Macintosh, just ignore the balance of this message.

        In any case, I'm not apologizing for NT's SFM... If it has problems, I'll
be the first to yank it.

        NT Services For Macintosh users, please post to the WinMac
<mailto:winmac@xerxes.frit.utexas.edu> list, so we can collectively analyze:

        A) Your particular system configuration:

                1) RAM & CPU;

                2) Number of hard drives & partitions;

                4) SCSI controller used

                4) Number of files in each MacFile share & in each partition;

                5) Percentage of partition that is full. [This is determined through
Diskeeper or through right-clicking the partitions(s) and scrolling down to
"Properties..."

        B) Average and maximum number of connected users;

        C) Whether there is a single AppleTalk zone, or if multiple zones;

        D) Whether the server has multiple NIC's and/or is acting as an AppleTalk
seeding router;

        E) Whether the connected Mac clients are all using Open Transport, or if
not whether they are running AppleTalk 58.1.5 (for all System 7 Macs, as
installed through Network Software Installer NSI-ZM 1.5.1); or if there are
any System 6 clients if they have been patched with NSI-ZM 1.4.5;

        F) If there is any IPX packet traffic on the LAN;

        G) If bypassing traverse checking is enabled, i.e if the key
NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate has been added, and the DWORD value is set to 1;

        H) If Diskeeper 3 or 4 is installed, and if so how often does it run as
well as the priority;

        I) Anything else that is notable... Sometimes minor things can make a BIG
difference!

        Please post these things to the list; and I'll compile everything & keep
tabs of what is going on. Sometimes the (seemingly) minor factors can pile
up to cause this meltdown. So far, in all the LANs I service, I have seen
no such problems with SP4 - patched x86 servers that are running SFM.

        Very truly yours,
        Dan Schwartz
