        Dear Brian:

Q. How do I type the Euro (€) symbol?

A. If in the above question you see the Euro symbol you have either Service
Pack 4 installed, the Euro hotfix for Service Pack 3 or Windows 2000, if you
see something else you need to install either of the aforementioned fixes.

Once installed to type the Euro symbol just press <Ctrl + Alt + 4> at the
same time.

The keys used may be different in other European countries, e.g. its <Ctrl +
Alt + 5> on a Swedish keyboard (so I'm informed).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

However, here is my reply to John Savill in re PostScript Type 1 typefaces:

        Dear John,

When I read your latest FAQ, it caught my attention that your Euro
currency symbol section uncovered a flaw in the FAQ; and I'll explain what
it is and how it came about...

It showed up as (|), where "|" is a vertical bar indicating (or
simulating) an undefined character.

As it turns out, SP4 may have indeed fixed a few TrueType typefaces for
the Alt+0128 Euro character... But not (Adobe) PostScript Type 1 typefaces!

Essentially, I don't use TrueType, because I do a lot of desktop
publishing, graphics, and prepress work. Even in Eudora Pro 3.05 I selected
Courier (NOT Courier New) to maintain consistency across all my apps. The
reason I don't use the TrueType version of this (or other) typeface(s) is
because of the so-called "Adobe 35:" These are the 35 ROM resident
typefaces in every PostScript printer.

Because of this, whenever a PostScript file is downloaded to the printer
for output, any resident outline typefaces in the printer ROM are not
redundantly downloaded (as long as they are listed in the PPD (PostScript
Printer Description)).

In a nutshell, the SP4 Euro currency fix only works for TrueType typefaces
that were updated in SP4: Other TrueType typefaces, and PostScript Type 1
typefaces are still not "patched" with the Alt+0128 character.

Brian, I hope this answers your question about the euro symbol... In not
too much detail! :)

        Cheers!
        Dan
