It takes a steam age guy to answer a question about steam file formats but
kerning tables for type 1 fonts are indeed stored in the "suitcase" file on
the Mac which also contains the bitmaps represented on screen in the
various sizes and other important resource information. On Windows the
metrics are in the PFM file. And the AFM files that come with many fonts
also contain that data.

One reason for creating bitmaps at certain sizes other than the obligatory
one size was aesthetic. You could do a better job by hand and if you had to
look at 17pt Bodoni for an off the top of my head example alot you may just
want to create your own bitmap instead of letting ATM do it.
